Richell Castellón

Richell Castellón is a Cuban artist now based in Central NY state whose paintings have been exhibited and held in collections nationally. It is the urban landscape and energized scenes of the cities that have captured his imagination. Castellón’s modern impressionist compositions are primarily created with acrylics on canvas

His style is loose, improvisatory in feel, but there is a strong sense of place in each of his paintings – be it a scene from Cuba or from a metropolitan city in New York state. While each scene represents a moment in time, Castellón fills them with emotion, energy and spontaneity that also reflects an acute sense of observation and mastery of perspective. All of the paintings exude a powerful sensitivity to the light and movement within a scene. Sometimes he offers us an unresolved narrative, and sometimes it is simply about naturally occurring play of lines, shapes and patterns with an urban landscape. But there is always an infusion of light and movement be it within a fully rendered color palette, limited palette or within restrained tones of gray, black and white.

Almost five years have passed since Castellón moved from the only country he had ever known to the unfamiliar landscape of Upstate New York. In that time he has steadfastly  figured out how to rebuild a life, that supports his innate passion to paint and to be the artist he knows he is capable of becoming.
