Adding Figures into your Plein Air Painting, with George Van Hook

$235 for two days or $130 for one day

Join George Van Hook for a 2-day plein air workshop in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of central NY. He returns there every year to capture the big-sky vista of rolling countryside overlooking many of the lakes.  George, a nationally recognized artist who has won numerous Plein Air competitions and awards for his oils and watercolors. George stresses alla prima painting using a loose and fast approach to capture the landscape in the first try. He will teach how to add that “figure” into a scene.

George Van Hook’s paintings have been exhibited for over 40 years throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. Van Hook’s painterly style follows in the tradition of the impressionists. Inspired by a love of nature fostered by long hours painting “en plein air,” Van Hook paints with gusto and passion, bringing a freshness and immediacy to the rural scenes where he lives in upstate New York. His fly fishing paintings, painted on location on well-known trout streams, are sought after by collectors.

Van Hook is also a noted figurative artist who paints people engaged in an outdoor activity or thoughtfully posed in a sunlit interior. George has updated that theme with depictions of young women in garden settings who seem lost in thought or amused by children at play; or outfitted men casting their lines in a trout stream.  His paintings display the Impressionist interest in color, light, and rich paint, yet the figures and settings are decidedly contemporary.

Workshop includes live demos and individual attention. Please bring your own plein air equipment, supports, and media (oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic), as well as your own lunch. We will begin each day with a demo by the artist.  At that time, he will discuss composition, laying out the palette, proper use of materials and all other aspects of plein air painting.  We will then break up into groups and paint individually.  He will then provide individual instruction helping solve the issues for each artist.
A materials list will be provided by the Gallery at sign up. Currently, the exact Canandaigua or location is to be determined.

Kevin Feary April Workshop “Let’s Talk About Greens”

2-Day Workshops
“Let’s Talk About Greens”
with Kevin Feary

Spring is coming and so are all the different types of greens Mother Nature has to offer. Let's get together in the studio of Pat Rini Rohrer and prepare for the variety of greens that are about to emerge in the next several weeks.

I will demonstrate how we can gain depth and variety in our paintings by subduing the greens we see in the distance compared to richer greens that appear in the foreground. We will cover basic design to include  the initial simplification of abstract shapes, drawing, value structure and color; while painting the beautiful vistas from photos you've taken while on vacation.

Or bring in any photos that you would like to paint using your ipad or printed photos. I will demonstrate my methods and techniques for landscape painting to achieve a sense of reality, yet still see thick juicy paint on the surface.

Individual instruction will be given both days as you work on your designs. Bring the supplies you're most comfortable using. As always, you can borrow any of mine.

Maximum 8 attendees per workshop day!!

22 YEARS ON S. MAIN STREET | The Spirit of Summer Solstice

Opening Reception Saturday: July 15 from, 1 to 4 pm
This exhibit will embrace the summer solstice spirit by featuring Pat Rini Rohrer and the gallery artists. Their work celebrating the exciting summer colors and emotions found in spectacular scenery of the Finger Lakes region, iconic travels or from inspired expressionistic abstractions and realistic imagery.

The gallery features original artwork of over 35 respected artists. Canandaigua professional artist, Pat Rohrer established the Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery.  “22 years ago when I began the gallery you have to understand my undeniable passion for the ‘Arts’.  I have been creating art for over 56 years.  Art is like a dance; both rhythm and a musical element find their way into the artist’s work.  It is magical how art transforms a person and community.” says Pat Rohrer. This year, my partner, John & Kelli Poisson have made some exciting changes with fabulous renovations and upgrades within gallery. The gallery’s new display space is located on the second floor. It has been named ‘The North End Gallery’, as a nod to Pat, as it was a name she considered when first opening her gallery 22 years ago.

The gallery is located in a beautifully refurbished 1850’s building on S. Main Street in downtown Canandaigua, a thriving art community.  The Pat Rohrer Gallery has garnered much attention and respect since its opening.  You will find paintings, photography, ceramics, glass, jewelry, original hand pulled prints and mixed media in this unique gallery.

What is especially unique about this gallery are the Studio II art classes and workshops taught by various professional artists. We invite all to experience this gallery and enjoy its creative atmosphere.

Come see The North End Gallery, the new expanded 2nd floor gallery space!

Refreshments will be served during the afternoon reception on Saturday, July 15, which is free and open to the public.

Let us say the twelve words we have been waiting to say: “Welcome to the North End Gallery at the Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery. We did it!’, exclaimed Pat Rini Rohrer, and John and Kelli Poisson.

The gallery is located in a beautifully refurbished 1850’s building on S. Main Street in downtown Canandaigua, a thriving art community.  The Pat Rohrer Gallery has garnered much attention and respect since its opening.  The new space is fantastic to the Canandaigua and Finger Lakes community.

Richell Castellón
Acrylic Urban Artist /Demo & Talk
Saturday, October 8
1:00–3:30 pm

Richell Castellón is a native Cuban artist, now based in Central NY state, whose paintings have been exhibited and held in collections nationally. It is the urban landscape and energized scenes of the cities that have captured his imagination. Castellón’s modern impressionist compositions are primarily created with acrylics on canvas.

His style is loose, improvisatory in feel, but there is a strong sense of place in each of his paintings – be it a scene from Cuba or from a metropolitan city in New York state. While each scene represents a moment in time, Castellón fills them with emotion, energy and spontaneity that also reflects an acute sense of observation and mastery of perspective. All of the paintings exude a powerful sensitivity to the light and movement within a scene. Sometimes he offers us an unresolved narrative, and sometimes it is simply about naturally occurring play of lines, shapes and patterns with an urban landscape. But there is always an infusion of light and movement be it within a fully rendered color palette, limited palette or within restrained tones of gray, black and white.

Almost five years have passed since Castellón moved from the only country he had ever known to the unfamiliar landscape of Upstate New York. In that time he has steadfastly figured out how to rebuild a life that supports his innate passion to paint and to be the artist he knows he is capable of becoming.

Meet the New Gallery Partner!

We are excited to announce that the Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery is entering in to a new business partnership with local businessman, John Poisson. Please join us in welcoming John as an active business partner to continue the 20 year legacy that Pat Rini Rohrer has built.

Both Pat and John have agreed that the 71 South Main Street building should remain an establishment that is “everything that is art.” John is an art enthusiast and avid collector of vintage lithographs, WWII posters, Pinball machines & Petroliana. John has expressed that, “From the moment I met Pat & her staff (all fantastic artists as well), it was clear to me that this was a unique opportunity that I need to become a part of! Pat’s unique vision of the total ‘art scene’ is what makes the Gallery so special and respected.”

Plans for the building include a complete renovation and will soon become three floors of an Art center that will include: expanded Gallery space, actual new Studio space for rent for artists looking to have a place to practice their art, include more styles and mediums of art, an expansion of art classes, and fine art supplies with ready-made frames in the Studio II Art Shop. The Studio II Art Shop offers your favorite fine art painting materials at great prices. Supplies for the emerging and professional artists in mind!

Come meet Pat and her partner John Poisson, Saturday, Oct. 1 from 1:00 to 3 pm. We look forward to discussing our exciting plans with you!

To celebrate we are offering EVENT PRICING on selected works of Pat Rini Rohrer during October!

Stay tuned as 2023 is going to be an exciting year for the Gallery!

Judy Soprano, Oil and Watercolor Nature Artist, Demo & Talk
Saturday, October 1, 1:00 -3:30 pm

Meet Judy Soprano: “I opened the door to my creativity and found my soul. I grew up on a farm so my love for the rural scenes is easily seen in all of my paintings. I love the way farmers construct barns and sheds on their farms. It seems to me to be very creative for one barn to be built then the add-ons come as the years go on and as the need arises. Our barn was the playground for my brothers and I. It was our Tarzan swing, our fort for cowboys and Indians and our castle for the king and queen (I was always the queen). My next love is trees. I love them in the winter when you can see their bones. And next come shadows. The way shadows run across the land…I can see them moving when I paint them into a winter scene. They show me how the land lies and how it rises and falls over the bumps in the back land of our farm.

The greatest compliment I ever received was when my nephew at age 9 said he could ride his bike down the road in one of my paintings. For a landscape painter that was the best compliment ever because that little boy saw depth in the scene on the flat surface of the canvas. How exciting! I work in both oil and watercolor but I love to draw…my sketchpad is my constant companion. I can’t think of a better way to say it and it sounds like very poor grammar but…”I can’t not paint”. I feel that my life has been enriched in many ways: my husband, my children & my obsession with creating art.”

About the Artist

Yong Hong Zhong was born in Canton, China and immigrated to the United States when he was twelve years old.  Yong developed a keen interest in drawing at an early age.  His determination to pursue his dream of being an artist prompted him to attend La Guardia High School, a prestigious school for music and arts in New York City.  Yong continued his education at Pratt Institute in New York to further develop his artistic skills.  He majored in Illustration and has a minor in Art History.

Yong started working for the Disney Animation Studios upon graduation. During his fourteen years employment at Disney, Yong had worked on over a dozen theatrical feature films. After completion of Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog”, Yong was ready to take a different direction and focus on his passion for traditional painting.  The knowledge and experiences he acquired from the animation industry continue to be an invaluable influence in his art.

Yong has been a fulltime fine art painter since 2009.  He participates in plein air painting competitions and teaching watercolor painting workshops online or in person workshops around the country.  He currently lives in Portland with his wife and two sons.

Participants will be meeting on location and painting all day from 9:30 am-4 pm with a lunch break. Workshop includes live demos and individual attention. Please bring your own plein air equipment, supports, and media (oil, watercolor, acrylic), as well as your own lunch.

A materials list will be provided by the Gallery at sign up. Currently, the exact Canandaigua or location is to be determined.

We will begin each day with a demo by the artist.  At that time, he will discuss composition, laying out the palette, proper use of materials and all other aspects of plein air painting.  We will then break up into groups and paint individually.  He will then provide individual instruction helping solve the issues for each artist.

Featuring the SUNFLOWER Silent Auction Event for support of Ukraine.

Most of us feel powerless regarding the Ukraine invasion from Russia. But, while buying a painting or art may not be at the forefront of your mind now, the “SUNFLOWER” has become a symbol for support for the Ukraine. Artists all over the world are choosing creativity and art work as their peaceful weapon to show their love and support to the Ukrainians.

Please join us for the “SUNFLOWER EVENT for the UKRAINE”, a Silent Auction starting April 23.
We hope to raise awareness and make a contribution to an organization to help support the people of Ukraine.  We are so proud of our community of the local, regional and national artists supporting this nation.
