Gamblin 3 NEUTRAL Greys: Portland Light, PORTLAND Medium, PORTLAND Grey Deep

These neutral greys give painters the ability to simultaneously adjust value and reduce intensity of brighter colors for more realistic color mixing. An interesting alternative to mixing with white, the Portland Greys quickly lower the intensity of a color without changing its Munsell value. The color gray is magical because it adds mystery to a painting, while giving the viewer places for their eyes to rest.

Portland Warm Grey: A middle-value, red grey. Ideal for reducing the Chroma of reds, oranges and yellows. Mix Portland Warm Grey with Titanium Buff to create an orange-grey or with Portland Grey to create a violet-grey.
Portland Cool Grey: A middle-value, blue grey. Ideal for reducing the chroma of violets, blues and greens. Mix Portland Cool Grey with Titanium Buff to create a green grey or with Portland Warm Grey to create a violet-grey.

Titanium Buff has been one of the most requested colors from their community of painters. This popular color is valuable in figurative and landscape painting. The more Gamblin painted with this color, the more they saw its value as a “yellow-grey.”

Oil Painting Mediums

Painting mediums offer a great deal more than simply extending oil colors. Mediums modify the working properties of oil color from the tube – from a fluid consistency for expressive mark making to a stiff paste for creating thick, crisp marks. Painting mediums also broaden the visual qualities of our colors – from increasing the transparency of paint layers, to creating a range of surface qualities, from high gloss to matte.
