Exercises Leading to Portraiture in Oil with Kevin Feary
Painting portraits can be demanding. We use the same practices in portraiture as we do in lanscape, still life and the like. So why does it seem so much harder? Practice makes all the difference in the world. This weekly class will cover the basics of portraiture. In the first two classes we will do exercises that help us understand proportions, mix fleshtones and organize the basic structure of the head. In the second two classes we will practice what we learned from the prior two classes and paint portraits from photos I supply. Professional Oil colors supplied by the teacher. Remaining portrait materials list for student will be provided.

Color Mixing in Oils with Steve BonDurant
With warm primaries (cadmium yellow, cadmium red deep, and phthalo blue), their cool counterparts (cadmium lemon, rose madder genuine or alizarin crimson, and French ultramarine), plus a couple of convenience colors (yellow ochre, cadmium orange,) and titanium white, you can make any color you need to make a cohesive painting. The Gruppé palette is simple and limited, and is effective for many accomplished landscape painters. This mixing class will contribute to color sense and value range, making fabulous browns and greens from scratch, and confidence about taming chroma and seeking the look of an honest painting. Worksheets on card stock will be provided the day of the class, and a complete materials list follows.
Saturdays

You’ll learn how to build depth with layering and glazing, experiment with wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry methods, and create dynamic effects using various brushes and textures.
