About the Artist
Steve BonDurant began painting outdoors in 1999 with workshops studying under Don Stone, NA on Monhegan Island, Maine, and in France and Italy. To this day he still uses Stone’s method of warm complimentary underpainting with the classic Gruppé palette of warm and cool primary colors.
After receiving his AAS in painting and BFA in medical illustration from Rochester Institute of Technology, BonDurant commenced a commercial art career in graphic design, illustration, package design, and branding. Outdoor painting was a logical segue. “What appeals to the human eye, to develop an emotional connection is a lifelong pursuit.” Those connections are developed by a sense of being, to evoke a memory, or remind the viewer of a favorite place.
BonDurant is a signature member of the Rochester Art Club, founding signature member and vice president of Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters, and paints most Saturdays, year-round, with The All Weather Gang, a group of invited painters that formed in the mid 1980s. Steve brings his easel nearly everywhere he goes, this year, including painting trips to Monhegan Island, Block Island, and Nantucket. BonDurant returned as a juried-in artist to compete in the Finger Lakes Plein Air Competition & Festival in June. And for the first time, Steve is also competing in the Adirondack Plein Air Festival in August.
